Pre-Departure Checklist for Ghanaians Travelling Abroad for Work
A practical pre-departure checklist covering documents, contracts, money, health, contacts and a safer arrival plan for overseas workers.
Departure day should be the final step in a verified process, not the moment when important questions are first answered. A written checklist helps you protect your documents, understand your employment and arrive with a realistic plan.
Reconfirm your legal travel documents
Check your passport, visa or work authorisation, flight itinerary and any required entry documents. Confirm that names and dates match. Use the destination government's official guidance because requirements can change and vary by nationality, occupation and route.
Carry documents in your hand luggage and keep secure digital copies. Do not hand your passport to an unofficial agent. If an authorised official or employer representative needs it temporarily, understand why and how it will be returned.
Read your employment contract again
Keep the final contract signed by you and the employer. Reconfirm the job title, worksite, salary, pay frequency, hours, overtime, leave, accommodation, transport, insurance, deductions and termination conditions. Record the employer's official address and the name of your workplace contact.
If the terms at departure are materially different from what you accepted, pause and seek clarification. Do not rely on a promise that everything will be corrected after arrival.
Create an arrival plan
Know who will meet you, where you will stay on the first night and how you will travel from the airport. Verify the representative's name and phone number through an official channel. Share the itinerary and confirmed contact details with a trusted relative.
Plan what you will do if a flight is delayed or nobody arrives. Keep enough accessible funds for essential communication and safe transport, subject to currency and customs rules.
Prepare money and communication
Tell your bank about travel if required, understand card access and avoid carrying unnecessary cash. Keep emergency funds separate from your main wallet. Save key contacts on your phone and on paper, including the employer, recruiter, accommodation, airline, relevant Ghana mission and local emergency services.
Arrange a working phone or roaming plan for arrival. Agree on a simple check-in schedule with family so they know when to expect an update.
Complete health preparations
Follow current official health and entry requirements. Carry necessary medication in original packaging with supporting documentation where required. Understand how medical care or insurance will work at the destination, particularly before employer coverage begins.
Do not travel when a serious unresolved health issue makes the journey unsafe. Seek qualified medical advice rather than relying on social media.
Pack for the job and climate
Check weather, workplace clothing and baggage limits. Pack essential documents, medication, a change of clothes and chargers in hand luggage. Do not carry a sealed package for another person unless you know and can verify its contents; you are responsible for what is in your luggage.
Final 24-hour check
- Passport, visa or work authorisation and itinerary are correct.
- Contract and employer contact details are saved and printed.
- Airport pickup and first accommodation are independently confirmed.
- Emergency contacts and check-in plan are shared.
- Essential funds, medication and communication are ready.
- No unexplained last-minute payment or document request is outstanding.
Safe preparation reduces avoidable risk but cannot guarantee entry, employment or travel clearance. Glo-Tribe candidates should complete assigned pre-departure training and use official support channels if information changes before travel.
